I just got some cereal that turned out to be very over packages pieces of sugar toast. You get two in a package and there are about 6 packs in a box. I can’t believe how much packaging goes into these pieces of breakfast toast. I don’t know what I was thinking when I bought it. Well, actually I was thinking it was that great cereal Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Why did I think that would be available here? Oh well, now I have some heavily packaged hard pieces of sugary French bread for breakfast should I feel so inclined. I don’t think I really want to deviate from my cup of chai tea and small bowl of oatmeal though. I used to go all out and make myself French toast for breakfast (or eggy bread as the Brits here call it). But then I got lazy and started waking up a little later all the time. I am going to struggle when I go back to riding my bike to school. I will have to leave the house at the time I now get up. At least it will be warmer again.
I cut my hair again. I almost gave myself bangs. Thankfully, Gisela dropped by while it was in process and put a stop to that. She also evened up the back which was helpful. I took this picture of it last week but it is hard to get a good shot of what I did. I put a layer in though which was challenging. Yes, I could get my hair cut by someone else but if you could see the hair styles that are common in Japan you would know why I’m doing it myself. They are scary and straight out of the eighties. They are really big into eighties fashion, hair and makeup here. It’s a little scary.
I am cleaning daily to get the house in shape for my delightful guests. I broke my bed somehow while I was cleaning my room. I moved it out from the wall and it just fell apart. Apparently having it lean again the wall was a structural element. I tried to put it back together but it just didn’t work out so I got rid of the head board, which was the broken part. The headboard was blocking an annoying draft in my room so I am glad it will soon be spring so I won’t have to deal with the cold air coming. I can’t believe Lauren will be here this weekend! I am so lucky that a few people can come and see my life here. That way, when I come home and want to talk about Japan, someone will understand where I am coming from.
I am heading off to the dentist after school today for what I hope will be the last visit in a while. I got a new guy on the team recently because one of the other guys wasn’t working out. This is supposed to be the age of painless dentistry and it definitely wasn’t feeling that way. I think I was a little biased against this guy from the beginning though because he was younger than me. It just made me nervous. So I have high hopes for today being a quick and reasonably pain free experience. I have been to the dentist 11 times since my surgery and, needless to say, I am a little tired of it all. My teeth should be impeccable by the end of it all.
The kids have been watching ET at school. I was doing some marking in class while they watched the end of it. When the movie was over, I looked up to turn off the VCR and I saw all the kids were crying. It was a bit of a surprise but there was not a dry eye in the house. These kids are 14 years old and both boys and girls alike were deeply moved by the end of the movie. It is refreshing in a way to see kids so comfortable with their emotions, especially at their age. No one felt embarrassed for crying during the movie. I felt a little callous because I hadn’t even been paying attention to it. I haven’t actually seen ET so I really should have watched it but I wanted to get some work done. Well, that’s the end of my break. I had better get ready for cleaning time.
