I just had lunch at school and it was scary. I didn’t know what a cuttlefish was until I looked it up. The kids tried to describe it to me and their description alone was enough to make me nervous. After eating, I googled it to see exactly what that bowl of horror was. In this picture, the cuttlefish is fighting a crab I think. They served it with vinegar dressing and cucumber slices. The kids were all watching me eat which makes me think it was some kind of terrible joke but they all ate it without interest. It looked like a bowl of elastics. I had my elective class translate the up coming school lunch menu but I thought cuttlefish was just some sort of white fish. Shudder! In other news, I went to a Brazilian night last night at the community centre. I was told there would be attractive Brazilian people there but it turned out to be just Japanese people so it was somewhat of a bust. It was all about how coffee is grown and how to select the best beans.
I don't even drink coffee. Afterwards, I went out with a few of the other foreigners who turned up and went shared a drink at a local bar.

We take a picture of every time we go there. Here is last night's group. The place is made entirely out of plywood and two by fours. There is only about enough space for three tables and a bar and everything is separated by beaded curtains. It's quaint to say the least. My co-worker has not yet given me his pictures of the school festival so I will have so show that one some time next week. I am just about to begin yet another long weekend. Monday is a holiday because of Health and Sports Day. I think it commemorates the Olympics in Japan. It doesn't really matter what it commemorates though. The bottom line is I am going to sleep in for three days! I understand that Monday is Canadian Thanksgiving. I think I have found a place where I can buy turkey meat but I don't know how it will come (in pieces or whole). I am going to have a small Thanksgiving party on Monday for the other gaijin that don't have this holiday to show them what it's all about. I am not sure if I will be able to get a pumpkin pie or the stuff to make it but I would like to. I have recently learned that my microwave is also an oven. I made an apple crisp which was nice. It's had to find oatmeal here though so I will have to search some more out before I can make another one.
I hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving and enjoy the long weekend with family and friends. Here is another cuttlefish for good mearsure.

See now there is my only weakness when it comes to Japan. The damn seafood.
My Aunt in Scotland totally traumatized me when I was little. She cooked this fish dish and the thing still had all the scales on it. I couldn't bring myself to eat it. At that time I was alright eating like fish sticks and what have you. So my Gran ate the fish and guess what happened, food poisoning. So in the back of my mind I think that I avoided getting sick that one time, so I avoid fish every time I see it. The smell just turns me right off. I can't eat eat cooked to a crisp there is no way I am eating that stuff raw. blech.
You truly are a braver woman than I.
